Explaining Water Quality Through Motion

Created with Waevy Films for Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, this explainer introduced the basics of water quality and how human activity can affect aquatic environments. We received the script, voiceover and initial visual direction, then developed the assets, compositions and animation for the film.

Process

Budget was an important consideration, so the production relied heavily on stock illustration. Our job was to bring those assets into a consistent visual world, adapt them where needed and use composition and animation to carry the story clearly from scene to scene. Visual Language

The main challenge was representing abstract ideas such as clarity, momentum, overwhelm and neglect without making the experience feel analytical or judgmental.

Rather than using obvious positive and negative states, we used gradual environmental change.

More activity can introduce life and movement. Neglect can appear through moss or reduced activity. Overwhelm can influence the atmosphere through effects such as fog or vignette.
